What does it mean? Why would somebody need salvation? To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in Me. Acts26:18
Man by default [because of the fall ] is under the power of Satan. No matter how hard you try you can't do good. You struggle and try to do right [and maybe for a time you do right] but you will always fall. You wonder why things fall apart, why sickness, why drugs and alcohol, why adultry, why death. These are all under the power of Satan. He by fear causes you to turn to inventions for magical cures and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. If it does work then He has you right where He wants you [relying on Him].No matter what happens you will be under His decision and away from God. Living in darkness. But God in His mercy will cause you to hit rock bottom and cry out for salvation.
